Nutrition research

Since 2011, the Bergen Research Foundation has supported a major initiative in the field of clinical nutrition research in Bergen.

Mohn Nutrition Research Laboratory

As an extension of the programme, the University of Bergen has established a Centre for Nutrition. The ambition is for the centre to promote nutrition research through multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary cooperation between researchers, units and institutions.

The Mohn Nutrition Research lab will mainly focus on three areas:

  • An Epidemiological section, based on collection of data and biobank samples from several studies, led by Professor Ottar Nygård, Department of Clinical Science.
  • A Laboratory section, which will focus on the mechanisms associated with obesity and malnutrition, led by Professor Gunnar Mellgren.
  • A Clinical section, where dietary intervention studies will be conducted, led by Professor Jutta Dierkes.

The donation in brief:

Project period: 2018 – 2023

Research programme for clinical nutrition research

The programme, which came about thanks to an earmarked donation from Trond Mohn, covered five main topics in nutrition research:

  • Malnutrition
  • Nutrition-related digestive diseases
  • Nutrition and metabolic disorders
  • Obesity
  • Clinical and experimental studies

The Faculty of Medicine and Haukeland University Hospital regard the initiative as being important to the development of clinical nutrition research in Bergen. The Faculty writes the following in its report to the Foundation:

‘The initiative has been very important to the development phase of nutrition science at the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry and at Haukeland University Hospital. A total of 109 scientific articles have been published, including some in the top medical and nutrition journals (N. Engl. J. Med., Cell, and Am. J. Clin. Nutr). A total of 15 PhD candidates have been affiliated with the projects, and the researchers have helped to teach and supervise bachelor’s and master’s degree students. The initiative has also played an important role in securing other external research funding from e.g. the Research Council of Norway, the Western Norway Regional Health Authority and the Kristian Gerhard Jebsen Foundation.’

As an extension of the programme, the University of Bergen has established a Centre for Nutrition. The ambition is for the centre to promote nutrition research through multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary cooperation between researchers, units and institutions.

From the Centre for Nutrition’s website: ‘Nutrition is an important field in clinical medicine, both in research, education and clinical practice. Research will be the main focus. Education is already taken care of through the program committees, but the centre will also support education and communication. The centre is connected to a network of research groups and researchers with relevant activities in Western Norway, both in and outside of UiB.’
